I love fiction based on history and I could tell that Jagodzinski had done her research. The author had me doing some of my own research as I wanted to learn more about some of these places and events. I felt that I got to know the character's very well and fell in love with a few of them. I hope she considers doing a follow up on the second generation. It would be nice to find out what happened to them. I am sure her second novel will be just as good.Product details

Terrific story, grabbed my attention from the start and held on until the final page. The characters were well developed and the historical aspects obviously very well researched. The story flowed at a nice pace moving deftly between several parallel storylines.
Although I have no real interest in history, I enjoyed the descriptions of the everyday lifestyles of the era. Most interesting were the interactions of the various characters of widely different backgrounds who were brought together in unusual circumstances and learned to coexist and develop relationships with one another. Now that I have turned the final page I already miss these new friends and hope that the author will tell the next phase of their saga!
A great historical novel in the tradition of Cecelia Holland. I really cared about these characters and their travails. Once you start reading, you just can't put it down.
A great first novel by the author. Story line and characters extremely well developed. From the first chapter I was drawn in and wanted more. Obvious thorough knowledge of the period. Look forward to more from Ms. Jagodzinski in the future.
I love this book. Not many books I read keep my attention let alone make me think about the characters even when I'm not reading it! It's the best history lesson I have ever had! I would recommend it to anyone who loves to read. I just finished it, and I already wish there was a sequel!
LOVED this book - Started at download and couldn't stop reading until finished - 3 days a super read and I chewed ALL my nails off = excellent writing. Connie is an amazing author - I want MORE!!!
This is a story of intrigue,circumstance and history. The characters are very plausible with the merchant adding a colorful linking part .if there were to be a series or follow on from this book, his character finding Khorys and Julia may well work out . A great read down Roman history's lane
The author certainly did her historical research. The detail of the customs, garments, food, and territory brought the reader right back into ancient times. The author also developed the characters well. They had depth. The story was very engaging. Just when you think the end is near, the story takes a new turn. The author left the door open for a sequel. Let's hope she's working on it!
